Dilantin, also known as phenytoin or phenytoin sodium, is an anti-convulsant or seizure medication that is typically used to prevent grand mal seizures (characterized by a sudden loss of consciousness followed by convulsions) and temporal lobe seizures (which affect smell, taste, hearing, memory and movement). The medication is commonly used following brain surgery in a preventative measure to prevent seizures. It is also prescribed as a muscle relaxant by many doctors even though it is not approved for such uses. Dilantin has been proposed for several other therapeutic uses, but its use has been limited by its many adverse effects and interactions with other drugs.
